Former Secretary of State and retired General, Colin Powell, has endorsed Barack Obama. This is a surprising move as Powell is a Republican and a military man, two things that would lead one to believe that he would suppoert McCain.
But thank goodness we live in America, where people are allowed to choose who they want for their president, and they don’t have to vote for their party. Of course most of us do vote for the party we are regisitered with (why else register?) but it is nice to know that we are not beholden to that registration–even if some out there would have us believe otherwise.
So what does Powell’s endorsement mean? Probably not a whole lot. He did call Obama a transformationalist, and indicated that he thought the Senator has the style and substance to lead America both at home and abroad. One possible reult of these comments could be that those still on the fence in the elcetion (and how could there STILL be people on the fence with the election just over two weeks away?) will listen and feel reassured about Obama’s abilities.
This probably won’t happen–I don’t know many people (right or left) who care about who one General (American hero he may be) is going to vote for. I could be wrong though, and this could be the final nail in the coffin for the McCain camp. I guess we’ll just have to see what the polls have to say, cause, you know, they can always be trusted.
